DIY: Easter Tea Brunch

It’s time for egg hunts and Easter bunnies! I love the colors and flavors that Easter brings to our house. Kat loves decorating with pretty pastel colors and creating sweet baskets for her nieces and nephews. This year she’s planning an Easter brunch for family and friends. I’m very excited about our menu so far! Here’s what we’ve got:

We’re going to start with eggs, of course! How can you have an Easter brunch without lots of eggs? Kat’s British friend Jocelyn sent her this recipe for Bacon Deviled Eggs. They are the perfect thing to nibble on to start off the tea brunch! The smoky bacon gives the creamy eggs a nice interesting flavor and crunchy texture.

We’ll serve these peppery ham tea sandwiches that are savory with a bit of bite. Kat’s also going to make these little mini spinach quiches. They are just the right amount of food to pair with the sandwiches. She’s going for a brunch that’s light and sunny, with springtime flourishes.

Then it’s time for Kat’s favorite strawberry scones. These delicious, tender scones are a hit with both children and adults! They’re easy to make and quick to disappear! We’ll have lots of Devonshire cream on hand to spread on them.

Dearies, I’m sure you’re wondering ‘But Tippy, what about the tea’? Of course, I was just getting to it! It took Kat awhile to decide on a tea that would pair with all of the tea nibbles. She finally decided on Wegmans Earl Grey Black Tea.  She loves this malty, bold tea with a hint of bergamot. It’s the perfect thing for all the sweet and savories she’s going to serve. The black tea and citrus flavor pairs well with just about everything!  For those that do not want caffeine Kat has created a beautiful floral blend of chamomile and lavender. It’ll be delicate and floral to match the upcoming spring weather. If the idea of a bespoke floral blend tickles your fancy, stay tuned for an upcoming post about blending tea with flowers!

To finish off the meal, Kat found this recipe for vanilla custard served in eggshells which will be a whimsical way to end the meal. She’s planning on serving cut-out butter cookies as well, in festive Easter shapes.

DIY All-Natural Tea-Dyed Easter Eggs

I know we’ve spoken about dyeing with tea before. But have you thought about dyeing your Easter eggs with tea? It’s actually possible! It’s a natural way to dye your eggs.

This is a fun activity for the whole family to enjoy! You can sip teas, have festive Easter treats, and dye those eggs. The colors may not be quite as neon bright as those store-bought dyes, but they’re natural and beautiful all on their own. And isn’t it fun to incorporate tea into your Easter Egg project? There are endless teas you can use, as long as you use one that has a lovely color you’d like to use.

First, A general recipe for tea-dyeing your eggs:

-hard boiled eggs (at room temperature- use as many as you like!)

– bowls of very strongly concentrated cooled teas (1-3 cups of tea, enough to cover a few eggs). Use 3-4 teabags and steep until the tea is quite dark.

-1 tablespoon of vinegar per bowl of steeped tea

To get even more festive, take crayons and make fun designs on the eggs before dyeing them. The tea won’t stick to the crayon, so your designs will pop and the tea will stain the background!

You can wrap rubber bands around the eggs in any formation you like, and then dye the eggs. Just like tie-dyeing, the bands will block the color and make an interesting pattern while the tea stains the exposed egg shell.

You’ll need to leave the eggs in for long enough to get the color you like. We left ours overnight to ensure they had a nice dark color. Be sure to pop the bowls of eggs in the refrigerator if you’ll be soaking them for this long.

Here are a few colorful teas you can use for your dyes:

Turmeric- you can use a teabag, a tablespoon of dried turmeric, or the grate the natural stuff (you may want to wear gloves if you are a bit messy- that stuff will stain your fingers for a while!). Your eggs will have a nice vivid yellow color from the turmeric.

Berry teas- teas with strong red colors like red berries will actually turn your eggs a vibrant blue!

Matcha- place 2-3 tsps of culinary grade matcha in a jar with 2 cups of water, put the lid on and shake away until it’s combined. The eggs will turn out a pale green-remember that the eggs won’t end up a dark as the tea’s color.

Green tea- this will produce a light yellow egg. It’s subtle but lovely for Easter.

Black tea- it may seem a bit simple, but black tea gives a lovely rustic brown shade to the eggs. This also makes a lovely backdrop for decorating with markers or glitter.

Hibiscus tea- Steeping up a strong bowl of hibiscus actually looks quite dark but it’ll give your eggs a grey/blue color. Sounds strange but it’s quite beautiful! In our picture above Kat used a floral tea with lots of hibiscus and the egg turned out very dark blue!

If you aren’t happy with the colors, you can always add some juices to your tea as well. Beet juice or Cherry juice will give you a lovely pink, for example.

When removing your eggs from the dye, be careful. The dye can still come off so use a spoon or tongs to carefully remove. Kat likes to use the egg carton to rest the eggs in, that way there is less possibility of the dye rubbing off onto a plate or a paper towel To create a marbled effect, gently pat the dyed eggs with a damp sponge. You can rub a little bit of vegetable oil onto your eggs if you’d like to give them a shiny finish.

Plan An Easter Tea Party

How Char loved the Easter season! She absolutely luxuriated in the traditions around the world. Easter in France consisted of enjoying the Poisson d’Avril (April Fish), which are fish-shaped chocolates that signify the spring season. Church bells are silenced on Good Friday, and the children are told that the chimes have flown to Rome to visit the Pope. On Easter Sunday when the chimes ring again, the children search for Easter eggs that the “chimes” have brought back with them from Rome.

In Seville, Spain, Char and I would watch from her friend’s tiny balcony as the confradias (brotherhoods) would slowly, carefully, carry beautiful, ornate statues of the Virgin Mary on their shoulders through the narrow, cobbled streets.

During an Easter visit to Portugal, Char fell in love with the savory bread, known as folar, made with cured meats and always with a hard boiled egg at its center.

This is the time of year where we all celebrate new life. Spring is all around, and the appearance of leaf buds and flower blossoms are inspiring. Why not celebrate this newness with an Easter Tea Party?

Be whimsical! Use cookie cutters on your tea sandwiches to make bunny or egg shapes! (This is the perfect opportunity to serve egg salad sandwiches!)

Consider serving folar, in honor of friendship. Char preferred the savory kind, but there are sweet versions as well.

Sweets are a necessity! For fun, see if you can find chocolate fish, but if not, chocolate bunnies are just as fun!

And don’t forget the decor. Be pretty in pastels, use tulips, daffodils or pansies for your centerpiece. If you want to go the extra mile, fold your linen napkins like bunnies!

And of course, the tea. Kat and I have been indulging in Target’s Simply Balanced Organic Black Tea Earl Grey. Now, some Earl Grey teas can be a bit heavy handed with the bergamot, leaving one with a soapy sensation. This tea, however, has the perfect hint of bergamot – just enough of the citrus to give you the feeling of a sunny day! The black tea blend is hearty enough to work very well with milk and sugar (cubes, please!), but smooth and balanced enough to be enjoyed plain.
